Help for the last mile in the sub-Saharan region
No clean water, no functioning electricity grid, no primary healthcare – a scenario that is not uncommon in remote areas of the sub-Saharan region. The founding of “S Mile Solutions (Pty) Ltd”, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, is seeking to change this. The start-up, based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa, provides smart, small-scale and off-grid infrastructure solutions that are mounted on commercially available pick-up trucks, thereby enabling companies and institutions to access rural and remote communities with their services and products.

Lower survival rates for women than men with germ cell tumours
Women with a type of ovarian cancer known as germ cell tumours have a worse prognosis than men with similar tumours, i.e. testicular cancer. After five years with the disease, 98 percent of men were alive while the survival rate for women was only 85 percent. This has been revealed by a new study from Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital published in the Journal of Internal Medicine.

Automated high-throughput sorting of living cells using laser light and AI
Tests on living cell cultures are becoming increasingly important for personalized medicine, drug development and clinical research. The Aachen-based Fraunhofer Institutes for Laser Technology ILT and for Production Technology IPT have developed an AI-assisted high-throughput process that now makes it possible to automatically isolate specific cell types. Using a so-called LIFTOSCOPE, laboratories can localize, identify and analyze dozens of living cells per second in order to transfer them to microtiter plates with laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT).
Automatisierte Hochdurchsatz-Sortierung lebender Zellen mit Laserlicht und KI
Tests an lebenden Zellkulturen werden für die personalisierte Medizin, Wirkstoffentwicklung und klinische Forschung immer wichtiger. Ein neues KI-gestütztes Hochdurchsatzverfahren der Aachener Fraunhofer-Institute für Lasertechnik ILT und für Produktionstechnologie IPT ermöglicht es, spezifische Zelltypen automatisiert zu isolieren. Mit dem so genannten LIFTOSCOPE können Labore dutzende lebende Zellen pro Sekunde lokalisieren, identifizieren sowie ihre Größe und Schwerpunkte vermessen und analysieren, um sie durch Laser-Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) in Mikrotiterplatten zu transferieren.

The local health authority is a central pillar for protecting the health of the population. Peo-ple in socially disadvantaged circumstances are an important target group for the public health service. Social inequality and health is the motto for this year’s Local Health Authority Day on 19 March. „Education, occupation and income also influence health opportunities and life expectancy in Germany,“ emphasises Prof. Dr Lars Schaade, President of the Robert Koch Institute. The social inequality of health opportunities and disease risks is also a focus of epidemiological research and health reporting at the Robert Koch Institute.
